A relative of mine who is a teacher, once asked me- how can strangers after spending only five minutes with me come to the conclusion that I am a teacher? Teachers are human too – they talk in the same language and look like any other normal person. She certainly didn’t seem very pleased about it. I had no answer to her question then but yesterday after meeting a friend I could understand the difference to a certain extent.
This friend of mine didn’t seem very happy. I couldn’t stop laughing when she told me the reason of her annoyed look. She has a son of a marriageable age and since he couldn’t find a partner for himself, as a mother it was her duty to arrange a suitable partner. The parents of the eligible bachelor like all good parents advertised in a leading newspaper and as a result they received some particulars from suitable girls. They shortlisted a couple of them and a meeting was arranged between the families of the eligible bride and groom. The husband of my friend is a professor and gives English lessons to people from different embassies. Now when the girl’s brother handed over the bio-data (not the most pleasant word but unfortunately that is what it is called in arranged marriages), the professor took a pen and to the shock of the guests made circles around the words and sentences which according to him were not grammatically correct or were spelled wrong. When he was correcting the girl’s brother, the poor guy sheepishly said- I made this bio-data, my English is bad but my sister can write very well. All this while my friend sat quietly, not knowing how to react. I don’t know the result of the marriage proposal, it is too early to guess that but the marriage of my friend and her professor husband is definitely undergoing some strain.
There are certainly some differences between teachers and the rest of humanity. When they are not in the classroom, the whole world is a classroom. Teachers cannot ignore an incorrect spelling or a mispronounced word. Their children and spouses are often embarrassed when they lecture on the importance of cleanliness to somebody who throws a piece of paper on the road. It might lead to a traffic jam but they won’t let him go till they are finished. To make sure that people understand their point they give examples and demonstrations in social gatherings. While other people normally mind their business, it is difficult for a teacher to keep quiet when they see a guest’s child jumping on the sofa even if the house is not their’s and the sofa belongs to somebody else. More often than not their advice is ignored but this doesn’t deter a true blue blooded teacher. Probably this is how people can differentiate between teachers and an ordinary mortal.

Ha ha ha!
I was just going to mention what Sakhi already said. If you spend time with psychologists/psychiatrists, you will find the whole world has some complex or phobia or ‘…nia’ of some kind!

if jo door se beautiful dikh raha hai. paas aakar ye bole, u is bery bery handsom’ then i would have to sing ‘jo baath tujh mein hai teri tasweer mein nahin’. grammar does matter.

As Sakhi says, Once a teacher always a teacher
Sometimes my hands itch to do that – when I have never been a teacher – so I can imagine how a teacher must feel

hahaha
You see I am a training designer, in my profession, storyboard must be well proofread. That is first thing when I review. So I mentally review every signpost, document that I ever come across. Thankfully in my hurry I never reread my own posts after I write them. Because I know if I review, I will make lot of lengthy, rewriting changes.

Whenever I see a website, I end up picking out faults in the design and try to find out which technology has been used to create them. I don’t know why but I can’t help it!
And all this just because I am a software Engineer.
So, I think you are right. You can never switch off your profession!

LOL
good observation.. I do that too but not with everyone..only those who want and can bear to be corrected. Moreover I don’t do because of my profession..I used to do it before I was a teacher. I can’t stand grammatical and spelling mistakes.

I guess this is the same with everybody but more so with doctors and teachers. It isn’t something that is going to change. A teacher wouldn’t be one without being so I guess.
Nicely written article though. Keep picking up such observations and packing them into your blogs. They are a nice read.

ha ha ha.. i m not sure all of that is there.. maybe teachers have a certain way of speaking.. of giving small, easy to understand instructions to adults and children alike.. maybe that sofa example is real.. but this is some drama for sure..

Oh I like a few teachers…but I hate teachers who are hypocrites
My favorite type of teachers are those who allow me to ask questions (and once I start , you can be assured I am not going to stop till the class ends
)
