Jaane tu…. wins over the Mayawatis and Shibu Sorens!

Good or bad we Indians have a knack for creating records and doing unusual things. The biggest mustache, longest nails  and other such weird things. When Dr Abdul Kalam was our president we used to boast about  having the most educated President and Prime minister duo in the world in the form of Dr Manmohan Singh and President Dr Kalam. I am sure the no- confidence motion against the government is going to fall but in case it doesn’t and as projected by the third front behen Mayawati becomes the Prime Minister (God forbid), we will again create a record. Our prime minister (Mayawati), president (Pratibha Patil) and leader of opposition (Sonia Gandhi) will all be women. I haven’t yet heard of such a combination anywhere else in the world. All this in a country where female foeticide and infanticide are not uncommon.

On Sunday all the news channels were reporting was, the buying and selling of our elected representatives. It was really depressing. I may pretend to not care about the happenings in the country but old habits die hard. It is not possible for me to keep away from the politics of the country, no matter how disgusting it gets. Fortunately for me I decided to watch Jaane tu…in the evening. What a film? I risk being labelled childish but I actually felt like a 20 year old and enjoyed every moment of it. All the actors from Imran Khan to Genelia, Naseeruddin Shah to Ratna Pathak, Sohail Khan to Arbaz Khan- I loved them all. It was so refreshing. Prateik Babbar was really good especially considering that this was his first film. I am sure he will carry the Smita Patil legacy forward. I recommend this film to every fun loving person. Let the critics talk about editing, costumes and other aspects. For me this is a film which can make you forget about the Shibu Sorens, Ajit Singhs and Deve Gowdas of India.

  • I guess I am not into politics as much as you are! But good to hear you enjoyed jaane tu. I think its a film for everyone even though its been touted as a film for collegians!

  • lol,that combo will be interesting :) i haven’t watched the movie yet :(

  • heheh….I think every day more people get less interested in politics…this is common for any country…any culture…

either they are no interested any more…or maybe the little time they have ….they would rather spend on entertainment whether it be movies, tv sports etc…

I surely don’t know whether that is good or bad when the young generation is not really interested in the country’s affairs…

  • its a nice thinking…by u tht our country always possess sm records…itz a big day in indian politics tomorrow…i hp d govt vil sustain coz nuclear deal is gud 4 our country…
last week or so our country is witnessing horse trading…that to lead by d major parties…itz very shameful for us…
i too is very interested in politics..irrespecting of wts happening in nd over thr…………

  • you are correct. films like jaane tu will give us refreshments amidst these political dramas.

  • I don’t even want to think what is going to happen if, God forbid, the Government fall tomorrow. Another few crores of the taxpayers down the drain.
And I still have to watch Jaane tu. Isn’t it a pity? :|

  • I need a break from Politics :) I am looking forward to watch Jaane Tu !

  • The thing that made everyone love Jaane Tu.. was that it was such a simple and light movie. It was all youth and nothing else, including the music. The story wasn’t great, we’ve only seen it a million other times but this movie was refreshing. And that’s what made it work.

And we didn’t make that world record after all, and I think I’m sort of happy with that. But the BJP did make it look fairly ugly with them ministers bringing out packets of money and blaming the UPA. Seeing that was sad. I can totally understand Somnath Chaterjee resigning, I mean, how can somebody possibly manage a bunch of people like these?

  • Welcome @UTP,
//I surely don’t know whether that is good or bad when the young generation is not really interested in the country’s affairs…// it is not a good sign if young people are not interested in the affairs of the country. However in the Indian context, I don’t think that young people are not interested in the affairs of the country. Have a look around the blogosphere and you will find young people talking and commenting about the affairs of the country. All the 24 hour news channels are thriving because people are want to know. The younger generation of MPs cutting across party lines are educated and well informed. I am optimistic, once the gen-next takes over things would change.
Welcome Radhesh, Jaane tu is a must see!
    Thanks prax.
Amit, the govt is saved! Must watch the movie now :)
    Welcome Sathya.
Sabu, I agree with you. Horse trading is shameful. Welcome and keep visiting.
    Thanks Nita.
Vishesh, it is a pity, you should watch the movie. I should claim commission from Aamir Khan productions :)

  • Janne tu is awesome..but more exciting was july 22 Rajya Sabha :P !!!

  • I’m not really aware of Indian politics..and seldom follows it..infact your blog is almost my only source of recent info on Indian politics..

    And I loved JTYJN..lovely movie :)

  • well now that u’ve striked a chord….we could have pappu can’t decide which side to support as the official indian politics slogan….;)

  • But what is really up with Mayawati? There’s so much of her in media lately, from TIME magazine to your blog.

What part does she play in Indian politics?

  • I liked Jane tu as well, felt nice after i came outta the theatre.. although i sat on the 2nd row to watch it :) Indian Politics ?? why do u even bother to think about it, unless u are a politician dont even think about it, it will only ruin yr day !

  • I don’t bother politics.The movie JTYJN avg ine.

  • Srimanta, Assemkhan, can we afford to not bother about politics? Our future, our country’s future, our children’s future is in the hands of the politicians.
Rakesh, Mayawati is a very powerful politician from the most populous state of India. She is the Chief minister of Uttarpradesh. Hers is a typical rags to riches story, one may agree with her policies or not but one can’t help admiring her achievements especially because she was born in a dalit family.
    Thanks Lubna and Rahul.
Moukound, Pappu has no choice but to decide.

  • our future n Indias future is in the hands of politicians? I didnt know that, i think they exist only for money. & yes, it wont make a wee bit of difference even if the entire nation starts bothering abt politics.. we need a change of consitution, what we have right now is rubbsh its outdated. So sad that no1 can do much but bother abt it. Mayawati … is she of any use? I pity the poor mikes :) Besides .. i want to vote but whom to vote? all are criminals n chor.. some ppl told me to do negative voting.. they said we all know BJP ho ya congress, sab bekar hai, but BJP na aay isi liye Cong ko vote do.. which didnt make sense to me. I pray n hope one day all the polititians of India are wiped out.

  • The film was good, Rahmans music was great, young actors did well. But I was expecting more Abbas Tyrewala considering his writing talents. But anywaz it was a good film.

  • Nice post! Compared to his previous movie-TZP, I felt Aamir could have done it much better this time. Though, I liked Jab We Met much more than Jaane Tu…

  • Thanks Ammar.
Thanks and welcome Manasa. Aamir didn’t direct this movie Manasa where as TZP was directed by Aamir.
