Look Who’s Talking!
Our politicians have finally discovered a grave issue threatening the country and its citizens. The conscience keepers of this great nation of ours are outraged and find the cheerleaders performing in the IPL an affront to Indian culture. I would like to mention a few politicians who have done a great service to the women of India. Ex- speaker of Orissa assembly was forced to resign after a female marshall of the assembly accused him of sexual abuse. Manu Sharma the son of a former minister Vinod Sharma shot Jessica Lal. She had to face character assassination during the trial even when she was not there to defend herself. The senior advocate responsible for this was a former minister and BJP MP Shri Ram Jethmalani. The number of criminals, rapists and murderers sitting in the treasury and opposition benches are countless. Taslimuddin, Pappu Yadav ,Shibu Soren,DP Yadav have all brought glory to their mothers and motherland. These are just a few names, there are others who arrange obscene dances for police welfare and for other different reasons. I may not like these cheerleaders performing during the IPL matches but how can IPL matches be singled out for skin show. Nobody objected during the ICL matches or when Mallika Sherwat or Rakhi Sawant perform live on stage. More youngsters and kids are likely to watch these women perform in skimpy clothes on TV than during IPL matches.

Maharashtra’s Minister of State for Home Siddharam Mhetre told reporters that he found the cheerleaders’ performance on the field obscene and that the government would try and see how it can be stopped within the law- Chief minister Vilas Rao Deshmukh is a regular at the Bollywood award shows and he is certainly not blindfolded when the scantily clad heroines perform on stage. His son is a part of Hindi films. Item girls in Bollywood films wear much less, so what is this hullabaloo about?
“What the cheerleaders are doing during cricket matches is ten times more vulgar than what used to happen in dance bars of Mumbai,” Nitin Gadkari, leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Maharashtra said- It seems you were a regular visitor to these dance bars Mr.Nitin Gadkari.
“If you are so interested in deploying these girls who dance after hits of fours and sixes, it is better to give chance to the bar girls who have been rendered unemployed after Maharashtra government put a ban on dance in bars,” Shatrughan Sinha a BJP MP and a former Bollywood actor said. Is it about unemployment or obscenity Mr Sinha? He took exception to the auctioning of players for the IPL. It is no secret that seats in the august house of Rajya Sabha are bought. The increasing number of billionares in the upper house is a proof of that.
Amar Singh part time Samajwadi party MP and full time official PA of Mr Amitabh bachchan was criticizing the cheerleaders and their dresses-His “so called bahu” wore a bikini in Dhoom-2 and he didn’t say a word about her. He graces every filmy function by his presence, seated in the front row attentively watching the Kareena Kapoors and Bipasha Basus perform in skimpy clothes. It is only the skin show in the IPL matches that bothers him.
There are so many big problems in India and issues concerning women waiting to be dealt with. Nothing done about the numerous reported/unreported rape cases, dowry related problems, female foeticide and infanticide. No strong statements about child marriages and Sati from our leaders for the fear of losing votes. All our politicians are concerned about is our ‘moral values’ and oppose the presence of cheerleaders in cricket matches. When will the politicians/law-makers tackle some real issues and not look for cheap publicity?

This was bound to happen. I’m sure the BCCI people knew it was. The basic purpose of Cheer leaders is to keep the crowd rooted and interested and they’re doing that. And the government just doesn’t have anything else to do except make a hue and cry about such non issues. I wonder when they’ll decide to grow up.

we’re just upholding our long standing culture of hypocrisy.

cheer leading is a western concept and will take sometime in assimilating in our culture…I don’t think cricket in India needs cheerleading ..the crowd is already boisterous to the hilt.
….maybe hockey

Rahul, I absolutely agree with you.My point is that the politicians are hypocrites and raise irrelevant issues.Nobody cares about the real problems facing the country.

The core issue is that when a foreign body attracts you and me, the people in power feel they will loose control on us - their slaves. Your body, mind and the senses in it are to be used only if you can create the kind of boring people the people in power are. Besides we may not think much of an attractive person, because since we lack enough power we cannot imagine doing much. But those in power can stretch their imagination to the extreme - and are scared we may well learn to fantasise like them.

It goes to show that our politicians have been working hard gazing at the cheer leaders, carefully noting down who was wearing what. If only they paid such attention to the state our country is in, and did something about it.
Another thing that comes out is the sheer arrogance, ignorance and lunacy of some of these idiots who say all this ‘vulgarity’ is part of foreign culture and is only meant for people living in the west - as if India is the fountainhead and last torchbearer of culture and morality in the world!
Let them throw open their cell phones, computers and personal history. We will know who is ‘moral’ and who is not!

We are perhaps the most hypocritical, nation in the world, who is bothered about the plight of women?I find the indignities heaped on the poor and tribal women without any one raising the voice. The leaders know well that we are spineless and voiceless as far as these issues ate concerned

Sigh…. not to comment on the current issue, but every so often it feels that the country is being pushed backwards by the government when everyone else is trying to take it forward…
(and the government alone is not to blame, we Indians are a faulty lot, but I still love us)

I guess we should dress the cheerleaders in sarees. Maybe that will help.

Forgive my usual ignorance, but how can the culture that produced the temple of खजुराहो say that bouncy cheerleaders are not part of the culture???

Hi Pr3rna! Great post! I agree that when the politicians take on “moral issues” they do so in order to be seen by their more foolish constituents as virtuous men and women — but without their going to the trouble of actually being virtuous.
The thing that gets me is that politicians everywhere make it a “moral issue” how women dress. I guess that’s an easier target than bribery, poor services, government waste, and illegal wars.

Thanks Paul.I agree//politicians everywhere make it a “moral issue” how women dress.//
truthwalker, you sound surprised! If you want to be amused further watch the Bollywood films where the actresses sometimes wear less clothes than these cheerleaders.
Great idea Amit.Remember Sridevi in MrIndia and all those heroines dressed in chiffon sarees dancing in the rain!
aristotlethegeek, you are on the dot as usual.
//Let them throw open their cell phones, computers and personal history. We will know who is ‘moral’ and who is not//good idea.
