IPL, Is It Cricket?

At the Ferozeshah Kotla in Delhi a crane flung Akshaye kumar from the top of the floodlight tower to the ground . Everyone in the crowd held his breath until the act finished and then broke into an applause. There were acrobats and there were pom-pom girls. Cricket was one of the actions scheduled for the day, purely incidental. This is the feeling I got after few games played so far in the tournament.
IPL is sure to be a huge success. The crowds gathered to witness the first few matches prove this.No doubt T-20 is entertaining and popular but I am not sure, whether we are watching a movie or Cricket. Shah Rukh shakes a leg at his team Kolkata Knight Riders’ matches, Akshay Kumar shows his stunts for Delhi Daredevils, Hrithik Roshan is there for Mumbai Indians and Preity Zinta is cheering for her team Kings XI Punjab. Chennai Super Kings has Vijay and Nayantara as its brand ambassadors. Katrina Kaif, Zayed Khan are involved in the IPL performances too.
My problem is-when Brett Lee is bowling to Mathew Hayden I don’t know whom to cheer for. I tried to be loyal to Delhi Dare Devils but it is difficult, there are few Delhiites in the team to cheer for. It might take me a few more tournaments to decide which team I want to support. It seems safe to support Shahrukh’s Kolkata Riders at the moment. I will switch loyalties midway in the tournament if Delhi performs better than them :)

All this is fine and everybody is enjoying but the way slogging starts from the first ball, Cricket seems to be buried under the glamour and the noise. Players are boo-ed even when they take singles, forget the reaction on dot balls. When it comes to Cricket I think I still love the longer version of THE GAME.

  • hey…cricket and glamour..that’s IPL..it’s looks a bit weird seeing all those filmy people there…but I think we will have to live with it..T20 has more excitement, mass appeal than their trashy movies……..also now our cricketers will have to live with sky-rocketing expectations…a maiden over in test match will also be booed

  • bloody nazis.. these guys have blocked my blog :(( ne idea what to do

  • Very strange Ankur! why, what happened?

  • I’m all for the Kolkata team because it’s got SRK, it has a nice dress and it’s playing well! And it’s got the most rocking anthem ever. Korbo Lorbo Jeetbo re, korbo lorbo re! :D

I would’ve supported Kings XI Punjab otherwise but they’ve now lost two matches in a row. And the second one too Rajasthan Royals. That is really depressing. So, all the more reason to go Korbo Lorbo Jeetbo.

  • Another one falls for the Kolkota team. Even I am supporting them. So lets Korbo Lorbo Jeetbo for the time being. :)

  • So this is decided,Ish, Amit and me all the three of us are supporting the Kolkata knight Riders :)
    ‘Korbo Lorbo Jeetbo’
    Rahul, who are you supporting?

  • Shah Rukh should be really happy. The blogging community is with him. What else could he have possibly asked for? :D

  • But we need to tell him that we are with him. How can we do that?? Any suggestions? ;)

  • That is what I’m wondering. I’ve never heard that he reads fan mail and stuff. Maybe we can ask CNN-IBN to do a show on the Blogger community and then show our support for him in there. Or else we can either go to Mohali or Delhi for the Knight Riders match with this huge poster or something that’ll attract his attention.

  • well, I am with who-so-ever wins, the heart still goes out with delhi daredevils

    My point exactly! nice post.

  • I just bumped into your blog. I dont like cricket so I m outta here.

  • Unlike others, IPL irritates me. It is too commercial for my taste. I have not watched a single match. Of course, I can’t avoid it when stupid restaurants insist on playing matches on big screens.
