Outsourcing US Election Campaign

Barack Obama called Clinton a senator from Punjab. Thanks to Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar she might soon  be accused of being the senator from Bihar. When Nitish Kumar was asked to comment on reports that he and JD(U)  Rajya Sabha MP Digvijay Singh have been approached by Hillary’s campaign managers to campaign for Mrs Clinton, he said- “So far I have not received any invitation. If invited, Singh will go since he is well versed in foreign affairs. I am definitely in favour of Democratic Party candidate Hillary Clinton”.

There is a large number of Biharis in New York and New Jersey and their votes do play a role in the election. It might be seen as meddling in the ‘internal affairs’ of another country but who cares. Indian politicians can smell vote banks from thousands of kilometers. Nitish Kumar has suddenly discovered a huge potential vote bank for his favorite presdential candidate- Americans of Indian origin. Why has it never been proposed before? It is no secret that Indians are emotionally connected to the country of their origin, the proof of this visible during cricket matches all over the world. Indian leaders can make some difference in the US elections at least this is what Hillary’s campaign managers are hoping. In a closely fought election every vote counts.

When Laksmi Mittal was called by French President Sarkozy to talk about french unemployment issues, I felt proud as an Indian. When Gordon Brown and Sarkozy talked about supporting India as a permanent member of UNSC it felt good. Outsourcing IT services and education  makes me happy but outsourcing election campaigns is going too far.
