Can Gordon Brown Find His Way Out of the Mess in Iraq?

On June 22 in a BBC  interview  Britain’s next Prime Minister Gordon Brown apologised for mistakes in intelligence made in the run-up to the Iraq war. I have always tried to differentiate between the people and the rulers of  the country. General public mostly sides with justice while the rulers can be controlled by the lust of power and other self interests.  Western intellectuals have  always been advising the US to stop this crazy war,  although I am sure Bush would like to get out of this mess as soon as possible. The only problem is he does not  know how to.

Civilians are being  killed in Afghanistan and Iraq. Intellectual culture of the western world seems no longer effective. ‘Might is right’ has crushed all human values, and war makers  have become  more influential than  intellectuals.  Materialistic and  scientific achievements have blinded war-makers into thinking  that they can lead the world. The truth  however is that, winning the hearts of people is the only way to lead the world otherwise we wouldn’t be remembering Gandhi 59 years after his death.

Britain has led the ridiculous war on Iraq under Blair,  how Gordon will tackle the situation is unpredictable.

  • Hi Prerna
I just thought I would come here and read your thoughts and comments I hope you dont mind :)
    How are you?
I dont think there is anything particularly new with this situation. ‘might is right’, and rulers ignoring the ‘intellectuals’ and seems to have been going on for many decades. There have been countless pointless wars throughout history. I think war makers have always been more influential than intellectuals because people turn to them in times of military crisis, and they can bring pluder and stimulate the economy etc.
To be honest I dont even know who Gorden is I dont follow news much but I think it is irrelevant what England decides to do in the war, because the USA is the more powerful partner there. Its important not to let a power vacuum develop in Iraq or Afghanistan where they would delevop into lawless places and be a breeding ground for terrorism and the local population would be terrorised etc. Or so the theory goes… But yes overall it is not the way to lead the world at all, If the world even needs to be lead by one country.

    Paul

  • There are people who talk only the language of homicide and I cannot relate to these people, whether they are a government or whether they are extremist outfits. Both are two sides of the same coin.

  • Thanks Paul and Nita.

This is the tragedy Paul, the war makers gradually start believing that if they leave the country there would be a vaccum. When the Britishers ruled India this is what they wanted us to believe. They told us we are not capable of managing our own country. 60 years of independent and united India has proved them wrong.
