Hurting by thoughts

Jainism teaches that one should not hurt anybody with thought, words or action.I could understand hurting by words and action but thought or intention I could not really understand till I came across quotes from Bhagwat geeta and that somewhat cleared my doubts.

Angry thoughts make us lose control over ourselves, lustful thoughts degrade us and greedy thoughts turn us from the right path.Bhagwat geeta warns us that these are roads to hell.Inimical, jealous or hateful thoughts burn us from inside.Fearful thoughts make us depressed, cowardly and sick.

Everyone has problems.Negative thoughts aggravate them. All of us have limits .To overcome our problems we can either seek help from others or get inspiration from God.Believing in God or an unknown power keeps us away from mental distress and there is optimism always because we keep working with hope that there would be a divine intervention if we are right. Here we have a choice, leave everything on the divine power and later be depressed by not making an attempt yourself or just be negative don’t do anything at all and blame everybody else,or divert our thoughts in a positive direction and start working towards our goal.

  • Hi Mum,
Jesus said that saying an angry word to your brother is as if you have murdered him in your heart, and looking lustfully at a woman is like committing adultery with her in your heart. I agree with you, negative thoughts degrade and defile us.
I like your idea of promoting positive thought instead of negative thought. I have always liked this teaching of Jainism, to have peace in spirit, word and action. I strongly believe it is one way to have less fights and struggles not only on a macro scale but also in our daily lives. I feel restricted from expressing my full views here, lest I offend your readers :) but I will say that leaving things to God has a huge soothing effect in my life and most of my negative thoughts disappear because I know that God is in control. I know that I don’t have to stress about people and events and anything outside myself which I can’t help, because it’s not my job to run the Universe. It’s freeing :-)

  • I was going to say something else, but first I’ll quote my wife in response to something Diana said, “It’s a lot easier living now that I don’t have to be the cop for the world anymore.”

Letting go of attachments is almost always good.

I had to think for awhile about how thoughts or intentions hurt anybody, but they do hurt ourselves, and that leads us to hurt others.

    You are right.

  • I am sure being a cop is a difficult proffesion.
Negative thoughts bring negativity in your character and even though you are not harming anybody physically you are not able to forgive and that creates stress between two people and your own self.
Thanx for the interest shown in the post.Your comments are valuable because I think you are a liberal and open minded person.
